Sappi Fine Paper North America has announced its 2011 Sustainability Report, which is focused on the environmental and social responsibility performance of the North American division. The report quantifies sustainability metrics and announces new goals for 2012-2016 including increasing the amount of fiber from certified forests to 65% and reducing the total energy expended per ton of product by 10%. more

Ingram and Better World Books Announce Library Return Program

Ingram Content Group and Better World Books have announced a new program allowing libraries to trade in old books for credit toward new content acquisitions through Ingram library accounts. Better World Books sells surplus books from more than 3,000 libraries and 500 bookstores on a consignment basis, with a portion of each book sold funding literacy projects in the United States and worldwide. Since its founding in 2002 it has generated more than $10 million in unrestricted funding for libraries and literacy. more

Apple Picks MathType for iBooks Author

Design Science has announced Apple has consen MathType as the equation editor for its new iBooks Author application for the Macintosh. MathType allows authors to create e-books that include mathematical notation for the iPad. more 

Apple Launches Interactive Textbook Development Initiative

Apple made several announcements this morning relating to the development of interactive textbooks for education. The company announced a new initiative involving a iBooks Author, a new, free app designed for interactive book development for the iPad, as well as agreements with major textbook publishing companies McGraw-Hill and Pearson Education to develop such books--and a few are available now. The company is also working with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt to develop educational books. Apple says the new textbooks and others developed with the app will be integrated with material available through iTunes University. more

Kodak Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection

Kodak announced the company and its U.S. subsidiaries have filed voluntary petitions for chapter 11 business reorganization in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. The company's news release says, "The business reorganization is intended to bolster liquidity in the U.S. and abroad, monetize non-strategic intellectual property, fairly resolve legacy liabilities, and enable the Company to focus on its most valuable business lines." Kodak subsidiaries outside the United States are not affected. The company says it has lined up sufficient working capital and intends to conduct business as close to normally as possible. more

InfoTrends Predicts Strong Growth in Wide-Format, UV-Curable Inkjet Through 2015

InfoTrends has published a new report predicting the wide-format, UV-curable inkjet printer and supplies market will grow to $3.04 billion in 2015, a five-year compound annual growth rate of 16.4%. The report notes the UV-curable inkjet market today is the smallest segment of the overall wide-format digital-printing industry but is also the most dynamic. more 

NPES Publishes Color Management Methodology Report

NPES has published a report entitled Graphic Technology Methodology for Establishing Printing Aims Based on Shared Near-Neutral Gray-Scale Appearance. The report provides a methodology for establishing consistent print town reproduction and near-neutral gray scale across all CMYK printing processes. NPES says the methodology described can be used on any CMYK printing system. more 

Steven Schnoll to Keynote Bombay Master Printers Summit

Steven Schnoll, Managing Director of Schnoll Media Consulting, will deliver the keynote presentation at the Bombay Master Printers Association 2012 Print Summit February 23-24 in Mumbai, India. The conference will be attended by more than 500 print leaders from across India. Christian education publisher BJU Press has introduced as e-book platform using an e-content hosting product developed by MPS Limited. The e-books are available as interactive whiteboard modules via MPS’  MediaSuite tool, which also makes the books available in VBK and PDF formats. The package includes a sales and distribution platform to host the books. more

MakerBot Industries has announced The MakerBot Replicator 3-D printer with MakerBot Dualstrusion (2-color printing) and a bigger printing footprint. Priced at $1,749 for a single extruder and $1,999 for a dual extruder, and the 3-D printer compact enough to sit on a desktop. more

Xerox Introduces Production Information Management System for the iGen4

Xerox Corp. has announced a Web-based tool for viewing with real-time information on the iGen4 press via PCs, Macintoshes, or tablets. The Xerox Production Information Management System shows real-time production performance, including machine status and productivity metrics, and allows operators to balance printer loads. more 

EFI Acquires Cretaprint, Expands Inkjet Focus to Ceramic Tile Printing

EFI has acquired privately held Cretaprint S.L. of Castellon, Spain, a developer of inkjet printers for ceramic tile printing. The purchase allows EFI to expand into the ceramic tile market, which the company sees as a major growth opportunity. more

SGIA is accepting applications for the 2012 Sustainability Recognition Program, which recognizes specialty imaging companies for outstanding efforts in developing environmentally sustainable businesses. Deadline for nominations is February 24. The winners are selected based on the submission of the facility’s sustainability policy and program information. more

Drupa 2012 Offers e-Tickets

Electronic entrance passes for drupa 2012 will be available online starting January 25. For the first time these passes will be e-tickets. Attendees can purchase their tickets online, print them at home or office, and travel to the fair by bus or train free of charge. The e-tickets are 40 Euros per day or 129 Euros for four days compared to 65 Euros or 220 Euros for the four-day pass at the door. Drupa will be held May 3-16 2012 at the fairgrounds in Dusseldorf, Germany. more

Quark has announced the latest update to QuarkXPress, which adds new EPUB features, EPUB 3 audio and video support, and more options for App Studio. Designers now can create a project specifically for EPUB export rather than being limited to converting an existing print layout to EPUB, allowing inclusion of audio, video, and hyperlinks to an EPUB book. more
